The
Life and Times of Elisabeth Schumann:
An
online exhibition of photographs from the Puritz
family collection
Deutsch
The photographs of Elisabeth Schumann
include family
portraits, snapshots, role photos and studio pictures - of
Schumann herself, but also of her family and friends. There are
200 of them shown here.
Many of her colleagues
are included: Richard Strauss and the conductors, Wilhelm
Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, Hans Knappertsbusch, Fritz
Reiner, Bruno Walter, and Felix von Weingartner, the singers
Fedora Barbieri, Gustaf Bergman, Karl Bissuti, Eugene Conley, Eva
Hadrabova, Helene Jung, Alfred Jerger, Charles Kullmann, Lotte
Lehmann, Jarmila Novotna, Leo Slezak, Gladys Swarthout, Kerstin
Thorborg, and the Vienna Boys' Choir and other prominent figures
in the musical world.
The images cover the
whole period of her life, from the late 19th to the mid-20th
century. They are not only the record of a great career, but also
of the times in which she lived.
The collection is
arranged in eight sections and is subdivided according to the
chapters in 'Elisabeth Schumann, A Biography' by Gerd
Puritz, as follows:
